What
is It?
The Visual Simulation
Environment (VSE) software product is an integrated development and execution
environment for discrete-event, general-purpose, object-oriented, picture-based,
component-based, and visual modeling and simulation applications. VSE
is an integrated set of software tools including:
 |
VSE Editor: Lets you
build your simulation model graphically using the object-oriented
paradigm with inheritance, message passing, and encapsulation. |
 |
VSE Simulator: Provides
animation and lets you run experiments with the simulation model.
Also sold separately so that you can sell / distribute your model
for others to use. |
 |
VSE Output Analyzer:
Lets you construct confidence intervals and compute general statistics
for your simulation output data. |
 |
VSE Teacher: Uses your
default web browser and lets you learn VSE by watching video clips
and by browsing through hypermedia technical, tutorial, and help information.
It includes the VSE User's Guide and VSE Reference Manual. |
This advanced environment can be
used for solving complex problems in many areas including:
- Air traffic control and space
systems
- Business process reengineering
and workflows
- Complex system design evaluation
- Computer and communication networks
- Computer performance evaluation
- Education and training
- Health care systems
- Manufacturing systems
- Military / combat systems
- Satellite and wireless communications
systems
- Service systems
- Supply chain management
- Transportation systems
History
The research leading
to the development of the Visual Simulation Environment (VSE) software
product was conducted at Virginia
Tech under funding primarily from the U.S. Navy between 1983 and 1995.
A fully functional VSE research prototype was created by using the NEXTSTEP
object-oriented software engineering environment between 1992 and 1995
at Virginia Tech. The
U.S. Navy-funded technology transfer enabled the development of the VSE
commercial version 1.0 at Orca Computer, Inc. between August 1, 1995 and
November 1, 1996.

about the history of VSE and the technology transfer, please see:
